Importance of Oral Hygiene During Pregnancy

The American Dental Association says that during pregnancy women should have regular dental visits. The ADA also says that all of the hormone changes that come with pregnancy can make some dental problems worse. Here are some tips they give for oral hygiene when you are pregnant.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with flouride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once a day
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks
  • Your gums may be extra sensitive so be gentle but thorough when flossing
  • If you have a problem controlling plaque you may want to use an antimicrobial mouth rinse, but talk to your dentist before doing so
  • If you have morning sickness rinse with a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water
  • A baby's teeth develops between the third and sixth months of the pregnancy so eating a well-balanced diet is essential

Doctors are discovering that unhealthy teeth and gums can increase a person's risk for heart attack or stroke. Bad oral hygiene has also been cited as a contributing factor to problems with the lungs such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia.
